Promise 4: Traceability

We can trace all our meat to the farms it comes from

“I like to know my food’s good quality, so I don’t settle for any less for Kye. The nice thing is, as part of the buying team at Pedigree, I get to choose where we source our great ingredients, working with farmers and suppliers to make sure everything that arrives at our factory meets our strict guidelines. It’s great to know he enjoys all my hard work!”

Hello, I would like to know from which farm comes the meat in the cans: 6 x 400g Gravy, Jelly, Loaf. Thanks for the info.

Hi Auriane,
All the meat we put in our Pedigree products can be traced back to the farms it comes from but this is specific to the variety and batch of the product. We first did this during the Irish Pork scare in late 2008 to make sure that none of our products were affected. Tracing is quite a lengthy and detailed process; so as I’m sure you can appreciate, as much as we’d like to, we can’t trace the meat for every request we get.

Does it really matter which farms the food comes from? It's still dead pigs, horses, cows, ducks, chicken etc. yummy.

Hi Jude, thanks so much for your question. Being able to trace the meat we use back to the farms is very important to us. This was demonstrated in late 2008 during the Irish Pork scare. We take great pride in our manufacturing and we acted very swiftly to make sure that none of our products could be contaminated with the Pork in question.

We categorically do not use horse in any of our products, this is a common myth that I can assure you has absolutely no foundation. As a member company of the Pet Food Manufacturers Association, we only use raw materials from animals which have been inspected and passed as fit for human consumption.

Member companies only use raw materials from animal species which are generally recognised as accepted in the human food chain. This rules out the use of any materials from horses, ponies, whales, other sea mammals or other species. It means that the industry only uses materials of beef, lamb, poultry and pork origin, fish, shellfish, rabbit and game.

ARE THERE DEAD CATS AND DOGS IN PEDIGREE?

Hi Jane, I’m aware that there are some malicious rumours about us and I can absolutely assure you that they are completely unfounded. Everything we do is for the love of dogs (and we don’t have anything against cats.) We work with Waltham and put a lot of care into dogs (and cats) – our aim is to help as many of them as possible.

We only use raw materials from animal species which are generally recognised as accepted in the human food chain. This rules out the use of any materials from horses, ponies, whales, other sea mammals or other species. I do hope this puts your mind at ease.

Hi Sophie, we do use pork in some of our recipes. However, there seems to be a rumour going around that we also use horses and dogs; I can assure you this is categorically not true.

hi is there any beef dereative in chicken gravy bones

Hi Craig, thanks for your question.

I can confirm that our Chicken Gravy Bones do indeed contain Beef in the recipe.  Therefore if your dog has a beef intolerance or allergy I would recommend you don't feed this product.  Should you like to know which of our Snacks and Treats might be suitable, please contact our Consumer Care Team who would be more than happy to help.  You can find their contact details by clicking 'Contact Us' at the bottom of this page.

Please can you help? I'm baffled by the meat derivitives in your products. Can you tell me what they are and where you get them from? Thankyou

Hi Lesley, thanks for your question.  The wording 'animal derivatives' covers the fleshy parts of the animal carcass, these materials are those parts of the carcass which are either surplus to human requirements or are not commonly consumed by people in the UK.
Examples of these are lung, liver, heart, kidney and tripe; they are all extremely nutritious (and delicious!) for dogs.
To reassure you, we are a member company of the Pet Food Manufacturers Association, we only use raw materials from animals which have been inspected and passed as fit for human consumption.
