Carbohydrates and your dog

Carbohydrates are your dog’s main source of energy – vital for all that walking, running, chasing and jumping. They’re found in almost all foods, particularly cereals and potatoes. Excess carbohydrates are converted into fat – so too much, too often will lead to weight gain.

Not all types of carbohydrates can be absorbed by dogs’ digestive systems – the ones that can’t are called dietary fibres. Dietary fibres are very important for keeping your dog healthy, helping to prevent constipation and gastro-intestinal diseases. They’re found in wholemeal cereals, pulses and vegetables. Just be careful not to give your dog too many or it could cause diarrhoea.
