How to stop your puppy from biting

When your puppy first arrived, everything they did was cute and adorable. But in an older dog, habits like nipping and biting need to be sorted out before they become a problem. Here’s how to go back to basics with your growing dog.

Why it’s important

Most puppies start off as enthusiastic little biters, but if you put up with or encourage this, even during games, they could end up injuring someone. If you can, it’s best to nip this in the bud before it becomes a real problem.

What to do

When you’re bitten, say “ouch!” loudly, then ignore your puppy completely for half a minute or so. They should be surprised enough to let go of you – and losing your affection temporarily is normally all the punishment they need
