Training your dog

Have you got an unruly dog who needs to go back to basics? Or a well-behaved dog who'd like to learn some new tricks? We’ve got expert tips and videos to help with your training sessions.

Teach your dog to beg

Here’s how to teach your dog to sit up on his haunches and beg, or “say please!”.

1. Start with your dog sitting in front of you, with enough space between you for them to raise their front paws off the ground. Have some of their favourite treats to hand to reward your dog when they get things right.

2. Hold a treat close to your dog’s nose, then move your hand upwards and over their head – far enough away from you so that they start to tilt their head backwards. This will encourage them to take their front paws off the ground. As soon as both paws leave the floor, give the treat – don’t worry about what they do with their front paws yet.

3. Repeat the exercise, each time asking your dog to lift their paws a little higher and for a little longer before they gets the treat. They’ll soon learn to balance on their haunches. At this point, add a verbal command like “say please!”

4. Keep practising until your dog balances on their haunches when you give the command.

If your dog’s mastered this trick easily and you’d like to take it to the next stage, try our “play dead” Training Academy video for more ideas.
