Training your dog

Have you got an unruly dog who needs to go back to basics? Or a well-behaved dog who'd like to learn some new tricks? We’ve got expert tips and videos to help with your training sessions.

Train your dog to lie down

1. Ask your dog to sit, in front of you, and then hold out a treat tightly between your fingers and let them sniff and lick it.

2. Lower the treat slowly to the floor so that your dog’s nose is pointing down between their paws. Let them to lick at the treat. If your dog stands up, ask them to sit and try again.

3. As soon as their elbows touch the floor, praise your dog and give the treat.

4. Add a command like “down!” to the exercise when they get it right. With enough practice, you’ll eventually be able to get your dog to lie down when they hear the command.
