The Rehoming Process
Deciding to re-home an animal is a big decision and everyone in the household needs to be ready for the responsibility that comes with it. It’s particularly important for rescue dogs that they are welcomed into a permanent, safe, and loving environment. They will need plenty of positive reinforcement and time to adapt gently into their new home.
Once you are sure that you are ready to adopt a dog, the Rescue Centre will take you through the rehoming process. This will usually include:
1. Registration and home check
2. Match to a dog
3. Rehoming
As part of the registration process you will be asked to show proof of your address, such as a driving license or a recent utility bill. If you live in rented accommodation, you may need to provide written permission from your landlord or housing authority confirming that they are happy for you to keep a dog in the property. Home visits are often carried out to make sure your home is suitable for the breed you are looking to rehome.
Once you have completed the registration process you can then begin the search for your new dog. Information about the individual dogs can be found in the kennels, detailing their background and what sort of home would best suit them.
Remember, the Home’s priority is matching the right dog with the right home, so sometimes the first dog you choose may not be considered right for you. Some dogs can find the kennel environment stressful, so any dog that is deemed a match will be brought out for you to meet.
Before you can take your new dog home, he/she will be neutered and micro chipped- you will then be registered as the new owner. Information packs with helpful tips are also on hand to help your new dog settle in.
A rehoming fee is requested to cover:
• The cost of neutering and micro chipping
• Initial vaccinations, flea and worming treatment
• A collar, identification tag and lead
• Free, short-term pet insurance and a starter pack of food
